Ostende voor Anker

Little Ships are invited to attend Ostend at Anchor. Details from the official invitation are shown below.
Skippers are requested to register their interest in attending with the Commodore.

The Festival – which has a reputation for being probably the most participant user-friendly in Europe, opens daily from 1000 hrs until 2000 hrs and has three popular aspects:

• Firstly the ships – over 150 vessels usually participate, each meeting our criteria that it be more than 40 years old, or is the replica of an old vessel. Some ships berth in the Montgomery Dock from where they offer short sailing trips during the event. Those which don’t sail are moored in the Mercator Dock, located in the very heart of the city – which is where the Dunkirk Little Ships would be berthed.

• Secondly the music - we have about 80 performances by music groups during the event, pre-dominantly (but not exclusively) ‘shanty’ and ‘folk’. Those performing are not only from Belgium but also come from the UK, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands. Most performances are on stages specially created on Vindictivelaan and St Pieter& Paulusplein, and there are also performances on several of the visiting ships.

• And lastly the exhibitors, commercial and non-commercial, embracing probably every traditional and modern aspect of the maritime world! Non-commercial exhibitors are located on the cathedral square (St Petrus & Paulusplein) whilst commercial exhibitors are situated on the Vindictivelaan.

It’s recognised that due to their age, any Dunkirk Little Ships that decide to attend will doubtless plan the journey to and from Ostend with great care, taking advantage of favourable ‘weather windows’. For this reason those DLS ships attending will be provided with a berth at no charge where early arrival or delayed departure becomes necessary.

During the event there will be several ‘official’ receptions and functions relating to the Liberation that will involve naval & military representatives plus various VIP’s including the Ambassadors of Great Britain and Canada and some Belgian DLS veterans. The crews of DLS ships attending are invited to participate with the VIP’s at these functions
